Club Q Update #98 - Reach Higher

This was the first and last time I wrote a song on commission.

The Isle of Man was then hosting nation of the 2011 Youth Commonwealth Games. I was absolutely honoured to be asked to write the ‘anthem’ of the games, plus an accompanying ‘fanfare’ that could be played as a short snippet. The fanfare section I tagged on as the intro to the tune.

Musically I wanted it to reflect my Celtic Island, but it also had to be a little rocking. It also had to be a fairly good tempo to reflect that this was an athletic event. I really researched sporting program theme tunes, and I remembered the one that used to be on BBC Snooker at home when I was a kid. Check it out HERE. I loved the feel of this, and used it as a jumping off point for my theme tune.

Lyrically? Well… I’m not super proud of it, but it’s appropriate I guess. This is the real reason I would think hard before writing on commission again. I just don’t believe anything I’m singing! It’s not a relatable experience for me, it’s not a scenario I was, or could imagine, being in. Definitely an Achilles heel - for both the song and me!
