Club Q Update #57 - Stream Of Consciousness
My recent ‘Can’t Steal From A Thief’ update (number 54) seemed to be a popular one, so I thought i’d run with that theme for today’s update, and look at how I start constructing musical ideas.
The video below is how I come up with 99% of my songs. I find a sound that I like (in this instance, it’s my PRS Vela into an Origin Effects Revival Drive pedal and then into my ‘68 reissue Deluxe Reverb) , sit down in my music room, pick a starting point (E minor here) and then let go in a stream of consciousness. I start off with a few licks to kinda warm up a bit, and then try and focus on riffs, chords, progressions and rhythms. Mistakes don’t matter to me, i’m not working on technique, and they’re a part of the process. Sometimes they lead me to a good idea.
I stopped around the 7 minute mark so as not to get too boring for you all here, but this approach can go on for a good hour or so. Sometimes something pops out, a lot of the time it doesn't.
I hope this is a little interesting glimpse into my writing. Also, nice to have change of scenery here in my little music room!
Cheers
Davy
