Club Q Update #22 - Will things ever be the same?!
Today started like any normal day. Got up, made coffee, spent time with my daughter and wife, planned the day ahead. We sorted packages, fulfilled orders, I showered and got dressed.
Then I put my face mask on, put a small bottle of hand sanitizer in my pocket, grabbed a couple of bags worth of packages and headed out. I drove to the post office, hit the automatic door button with my elbow and walked in.
Orange tape strewn across the floor indicated where I could stand to wait my turn. Every so often we all shuffled 6 feet forward in a unified silence. You could hear a pin drop. Eventually, it was my turn. I stepped up to the transparent plastic sheeting that separated me from the USPS worker behind the desk. I felt like I was walking into a forensic investigation… I felt so sorry for her. The only way to tell there was a human in front of me was a tired but friendly voice asking how she could help. I asked if I could put my bags up on the desk for her. I don’t know what the protocol is… I’m only here because I feel bad that our postman has been picking up enormous amounts of packages on his daily rounds. Thought i’d give him a break.
I walked out, sad. What if this is the new normal? What if the lady working at the post office got sick? Perhaps worst of all, what if, when everyday life fades back into view, we are all left with a lingering suspicion of the people around us?
Will things ever be the same after this?
Sidenote - for those interested in the technical aspects… Guitar is a PRS Vela through a Strymon El Capistan delay and into my Bludotone DK30 amp (mic’d up with an Audix i5). Vocal mic is a super cool ‘Copperphone’ mic - it just sounds like this! I added a little slapback delay in garageband. That’s it!
